Date News
March 9, 2007 From the President:

Hi Everyone-

In the hectic race of day to day operations, I wanted to make sure that everyone had some visibility into what lies ahead in March. The season is about to begin, and things are going to be FUN, but busy!

March 17--Mulch delivery. There is no practice on this Saturday, as all of the rowers and as many parents who can will be delivering close to 7,000 bags of mulch. It is a full day-8:15 (SHARP!) until we're done (5:00ish)! It is a lot of work, but a great way to get to know the other people on the team!

March 18--First Flick, or regatta. Whether you rower will be racing or not, this is a great time to come down, find the tent, and get your bearings. Each week further into the season, things will get progressively more crowded. I am not sure of exactly when Kelly Drive will be closed off--7:00 or 8:00 a.m. If you don't have a parking pass, you will need to park up on the hill overlooking the Schuylkill and walk down, or take the shuttle bus which is supposed to run every half hour. Although it is certainly more convenient to have a pass, the walk down is very do-able.

NOTE-To check the regatta schedule, go to www.phillyflicks.com, or www.regattacentral.com. Both will give you race times and results throughout the season.

PARKING PASSES- Our club has been issued 20. They are rationed out to each club, depending on how many rowers are on their roster. It's nice to have a pass, because you can park fairly close to the tent. The way you can get a pass is to volunteer for a job. If you are setting up the tent or taking it down, acting as chef for the day, or selling t shirts, you will be given a pass. Please print out the schedules you have received from the regatta committee, and that you will be getting from the t shirt committee, so you know when you will be working, and what food you will need to bring each week. If you want more passes--volunteer more!!

March 24-Wine and Cheese Tasting Party. Please sign up with the Lavenders, and bring your friends.

March 25-Flick #2

March 31-Second Spirit Dinner at the Rudman's house for rowers only. Cecelia Rudman will send out further details, as well as food assignments. Encourage your rower to go!!

The beginning of April is Spring Training. Exact times have not yet been determined, but your rower will be at the river all day. Bus transporataion, unlike other years WILL BE PROVIDED.

Please call me, or any Board member with any questions you may have as we get busy here. We are all always available to help you out.

Thanks for your support!!

February 26, 2007 From the Regatta Co-Chairs:

Calling all Stoga rowing families - regatta season is coming soon!!

Regattas - After all these weeks of hard work, the fun of race days is approaching and we would like to line up help for the regattas. The club sets up a tent and all families contribute food. Parents and rowers hang out at the river and eat and cheer on our Stoga boats. If everyone helps with these events, the work load is shared. Please volunteer to help! Thanks to Barbara Ellis for volunteering to coordinate the paper goods and supplies for our regattas. We will need regatta chefs for the following dates listed below.

Regatta Chefs - Volunteers needed (sign-up sheet was distributed via email):

There will be a food assignment sheet sent to all families soon but in addition to hoagies, salads, and snacks listed on the assignment sheet, the team usually has a hot meal cooked by one or two families. The team owns a small portable gas grill and a large cooking pot with propane stove. In the past we have had chili, hamburgers, hot dogs, grilled chicken, soup, etc. Feel free to find another family and pick a Sunday to cook together. If novice families volunteer, we will try to pair you up with a JV/V family. There will be about six families assigned to help provide the food (or funds to buy the food) for cooking each week. Below are the dates of the regattas:

Flicks 2 through 5 - (March 25, April 1, April 15, April 22)

"Cities" (May 6)

ISC - (April 21) & Cooper River (April 29) are away regattas and cooks are needed

Dr. White - (May 13) is the novice championship regatta and this event is coordinated later in the season by novice families

Stotesbury (May 20) - Volunteers are needed to cook breakfast or lunch

Please sign up on the attached sign-up sheet calendar (distributed via email) and return to me at - java1416<at>aol.com

Feel free to contact us with any questions.

February 28, 2007

Schuylkill Navy Banquet - On March 24th, our own Cody Lowry will be recognized as one who rowed more than 1,000 miles in 2006.

February 26, 2007 From the President:

Hi Everyone-

Even though we are slipping and sliding on the roads, the crew schedule moves forward!! Three boats made it out to row on the Schuylkill yesterday, and on the water practice is in full swing!! The bus will leave from the gym lobby at 4 p.m. tomorrow, and rowers will return typically between 8 and 8:30. Rowers who don't go home for a snack at the end of the day may want to pack something to eat. If you are picking your rower up when the bus returns, you may want to suggest that they call you on their cell phone as they get close to school. Return times can vary widely depending on roads and traffic.

Remember that mulch orders are due in to the system on WEDNESDAY, and that checks are due to Jane Klotzbach. This is a great fundraiser, and can get you very close--if not over your $500 fundraising goal. If you go over, it can put you in the running for a loaner erg!!

A huge round of applause goes to the Weber family for a wonderful Spirit Dinner on Saturday night. A great time was had by all. The last minute help with bringing desserts was overwhelming, and much appreciated. What a wonderful group of families we are all fortunate to be a part of!!

Last but not least--a huge thank you to Jeff Pepin, Taylor Caldwell, and the hearty group of rowers and parents who helped paint the oars, and transport the launches and jon boats back to their home at Bachelors so the rowers can get out on the water. This is not a trivial feat, and they executed it with a smile on their faces.

A couple of scheduling notes as we look ahead....

  • Mulch delivery is scheduled for Saturday, March 17th. This is a FULL DAY affair, with help from parents being very much needed and appreciated. You will get more details soon.
  • The first Flick (regatta) is Sunday, March 18. This is a great regatta to come down to, as it is not as crowded as others will be. It is a great time to find our tent, and get the "lay of the land". Hope to see you all there.
  • Our Wine Tasting party is being held on March 24th. This is a club fundraiser, and promises to be a wonderful evening. Mark your calendars now!!

Thanks, as always for all of your support!!

February 12, 2007 From the President...

Hi Everyone-

I want to start by congratulating the Beef & Beer/Silent Auction committee for a terrific event on Friday night. Many thanks to Leslie Lavender, Jane Klotzbach, Robin Lichman, Karen Denney, Gail McElwee and John Savo for all of your efforts behind the scenes. Special thanks to Henry Fregeau for the delicious beef!! We raised approximately $7000 to help pay for our new equipment and operating expenses. Thanks also to everyone who attended the event and supported our team!!

We had a great turnout of Novice Parents at the boathouse orientation yesterday. It was cold but very informative! Standing in the cold boathouse reminded me of how warm my Stoga fleece headband would have been had I remembered to wear it! If you or your rower want a headband, please contact Trish Connell. Conestoga Crew handbooks were also distributed. Many thanks to Beth Anderson who put together the handbooks!!

Our next event this month is the Spirit Dinner at the Weber's house on Saturday, February 24th. Please plan to come with your rower to enjoy some great food and company. This will be the only Spirit Dinner where parents will be included.

On the water practice is scheduled to begin on February 21st. Stay tuned for details on that. When on the water practice begins, the bus will pick up students at Conestoga at 4 p.m., and will return to Conestoga around 8:15 p.m. The library is open until 3:45 p.m., so students who choose not to go home after school typically congregate there to get a head start on homework. Some of you have asked about the timing of practice during spring break. While I do not have that information confirmed yet, I can tell you that there will be bus transportation down to the river and back for our rowers. This is a change from previous years.

I would also like to remind you that when school is closed there is no practice.

Lastly, I will be placing an order for ACME gift cards this week, so if you would like me to order one for you--just let me know. 5% of the value for the card will be credited to your fundraising account. It is an easy way to make progress toward your $500 goal.

Thanks for your support!

From the President...

Thanks to everyone who was able to make it to the meeting the other night!! I know it is a busy time for you all. For those who were not able to come, your rower has been given a packet of very important information. Please check with them if you have not seen it yet.

A lot was covered the other night! I thought it might be helpful to summarize the important dates that are coming up.

January 26 -Clothing orders DUE to Carolyn Weber. The clothing order must be placed so that rowers have their unis in time for the first Flick (regatta).

February 2 - Second payment of $500 is due. Our club address is P.O. Box 162, Berwyn, PA 19312, or you can give your check to John Savo.

February 9 - Beef & Beer and Silent Auction at the Saturday Club in Wayne (7 p.m. to 11 p.m.). Tickets are $30 per person for this very fun evening. Donations for the Silent Auction are being gratefully received by Karen Denney, Jane Klotzbach and Leslie Lavender. Please call them if you need an idea, or to arrange to drop your item off.

February 11 - Boathouse orientation for Novice Parents. Amy Giddings will give you a tour of the bottom floor of the boathouse and our boats, and answer your questions. Since parents are not welcome at the boathouse during regattas, this is a great opportunity to learn and see more about what your rower is doing/talking about. Novice Parents will also receive their Conestoga Crew handbook.

As always, please call if you have questions or concerns.

Thanks for your support.

From the President...

Hi Everyone-

I wanted to make you aware of an important schedule change--our registration meeting will now be held on Tuesday, November 14, at 7 p.m. in Room 142. Registration packets will be due back on December 11, and that is an important date, because packets turned in after that date will be subject to a $50 late fee. Please think about getting your medical appointment now, if you haven't already.

I am sure you have all seen Paul's email about a fall training program (check the News page for more), and hope you will consider taking advantage of it!! It is a great opportunity to stay in shape, and to get ready for an even better spring season!! If you have your own erg, and can loan it to the program, it would be appreciated very much.

Lastly as a reminder, the Crew Club will have a table set up during all lunches on Tuesday, September 26 for the Conestoga Activity Fair. Please come by the table to support the club, and to encourage others to try it!!

Thanks.
